La IEEE ha sviluppato la norma IEEE802.3af per standardizzare i sistemi che permettono l’alimentazione in bassa tensione a dispositivi in rete attraverso le linee di comunicazione. In vigore dalla metà del 2003, lo standard fu intitolato: Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) Power via Media Dependant Interface (MDI). Di fatto è più comunemente noto come Power over Ethernet (POE). Gli alimentatori di tipo POE permettono di alimentare dispositivi di rete attraverso gli stessi cavi di categoria CAT-5 che si utilizzano per i dati. I dispositivi alimentati via POE possono pertanto essere installati in qualsiasi rete Ethernet senza necessitare di una alimentazione AC. I benefici del sistema POE includono pertanto una maggiore flessibilità di utilizzo per i dispositivi da alimentare, maggiore sicurezza (dato che non è richiesta l’alimentazione AC), semplicità di installazione, affidabilità, sicurezza e risparmio economico.

GlobTek fornisce sia sistemi di alimentazione (Power Sourcing Equipment, PSE) che dispositivi alimentati via POE (Powered Devices, PD). I sistemi PSE raggiungono i 70 W a 56 V massimo. Ciascun alimentatore PSE è collegato a ciascun dispositivo terminale tramite la linea di comunicazione. GlobTek fornisce anche dispositivi PD nella configurazione di POE Splitters progettati per convertire la tensione di alimentazione del sistema CAT-5 in tensione nel range 5-24 VDC mantenendo inalterata la trasmissione dati.

La linea di prodotti GlobTek PSE mostrata sotto risponde ai requisiti DOE EPS 2.0 di livello IV per l’efficienza energetica, come descritto al link: http://en.globtek.com/level-vi-power-supplies/. Per l’applicazione delle norme DOE in USA, a pag. 41 delle FAQ predisposte dall’Ente normatore USA è riportato che gli alimentatori POE devono avere livello di efficienza IV così come gli alimentatori esterni. La tecnologia brevettata da GlobTek permette la realizzazione dei sistemi POE più efficienti presenti oggi sul mercato.
